The Early Republic and Antebellum America: 1788-1860 This course is the second in a four-course survey of American history. Beginning with the constitutional debates and the political challenges of the 1790s, this course concludes with an examination of the causes of the Civil War. Additional topics covered include Federalist and Republican political debates, the Lewis and Clark expedition to the West, the War of 1812, the emergence of a national market and democratic culture, slavery in antebellum America, the Second Great Awakening, reform movements, the American Renaissance, and the Mexican-American War.
